Follow this tutorial to get your iPhone 3G tethered to your Laptop:

Jailbreak your iPhone 3g

Install 3proxy & MobileTerminal

    3proxymobileterminal

  1. Fire up the “Cydia” application that was installed during the iPhone 3G jailbreak
  2. Navigate to Search and type in both programs
  3. Find and install MobileTerminal
  4. Find and install 3Proxy
  5. Hit the “Home” button to verify that MobileTerminal is now installed on the homescreen (3Proxy isn’t a GUI app, so you won’t see an application icon)
  • Create an ad-hoc WiFi network on your laptop
  • Name it something memorable – like “iPhone Connection”
  • Make a password “54321″ must be 5 numbers long… Verify it and hit OK

  • Now Choose your new Network (Notice your WiFi bars [top right] has a changed image)
  • Picture 9

  • Lock your iPhone 3G on to the ad-hoc WiFi network you just created
    1. Settings>WiFi Networks
  • Find out your iPhone’s IP address
    1. Setting>WiFi Networks
    2. Tap on the WiFi network you just joined – “iPhone Connection,” in this case
    3. Tap on the little blue arrow to the right
    4. Write down the iPhone IP address (This might take a minute to pop up)

  • Fire up MobileTerminal on your iPhone 3G
    1. Execute the proxy program
      1. Type in “socks” and hit enter (your yellow cursor will drop to the next line on the left of the screen)
      2. You won’t get any confirmation that the SOCKS server is up and running, but it is

      4. Tap the “Home” button to return to homescreen (by tapping the home button, it is still running in the background)
        1. Remember to quit the MobileTerminal application by opening it later and holding down the “Home” button and forcing it to quit, (Hold the Home button for about 5-10 seconds until it shuts down) This is when you are done Tethering.
  • Start up your iPhone’s Safari browser and open a web page
    1. Wait for your iPhone’s Safari browser to realize that it can’t use the ad-hoc WiFi network (because it leads nowhere, for now) and then switch to using the 3G data connection
    2. This step takes a little while, so be patient
  • Configure Firefox to use your iPhone proxy (Must use Mozilla Firefox Web Browser)
    1. Preferences>Advanced>Network>Setting
    2. Click on Manual proxy configuration (3rd screenshot below) “Remember to switch back to No proxy when finished”
    3. Find the “SOCKS Host” field and enter the IP address you wrote down earlier (3rd screenshot below)
    4. Set port to”1080″ (3rd screenshot below)

    6. Go to Firefox’s address bar and type in “about:config”

    7. Picture 5

    8. Find the “Filter” field and type in “socks”
      1. Hit Enter

      Picture 6

    9. Find the entry that looks like “network.proxy.socks_remote_dns”
      1. Double click
    10. Change value to “true” (it shows true above already, I had it saved that way)

  • You’re done, get to surfing the web through your new iPhone 3G tether!
  • Remember to quit MobileTerminal when you’re done surfing at 3G speeds. Start up MobileTerminal again and hold down the “Home” button until the application force-quits (your iPhone will get hot while running a tether and go through the battery very quickly. Make sure your laptop is charging if possible)

If AT&T sees a big spike in Internet use, they can charge you. My suggestion is don’t spend all day surfing the Internet using your iPhone.

AT&T Contract that you signed states below:

The parties agree that AT&T has the right to impose additional charges if you use more than 5 GB in a month.  Prior to the imposition of any additional charges, AT&T shall provide you with notice and you shall have the right to terminate your service.
