1. Quit iTunes.
2. Open a Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal)
3. Type or copy the following command:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes AutomaticDeviceBackupsDisabled -bool true

4. Open iTunes.
5. Connect the iPhone.
6. You can now Sync without backing up.

To enable Automatic backup in iTunes again use the following command instead:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes AutomaticDeviceBackupsDisabled -bool false


windows


PC Users:

Windows users can use the same approach:

1. Quit iTunes.
2. Press Win+R (opens the Windows Run dialog)
3. Type or copy the following command:

“%CommonProgramFiles%AppleMobile Device Supportbindefaults.exe” write com.apple.iTunes AutomaticDeviceBackupsDisabled -bool true

4. Open iTunes.

5. Connect the iPhone.

6. You can now Sync without backing up.

Note: You can always simply Click the Corss Icon in the iTunes Message window when iPhone|iPod is syncing – that also skips the Backup.

Important : If you do this – Please be warned – keep in mind to “Manually Backup Your Device” once in a while.

The automatic backups for the iPhone | iPod Touch takes a long time to Backup hence resulting in Longer Sync Times!. One option that you can choose is to Backup your Device manually.

To do this – When iPhone starts to Sync – & you see “backing up” displayed on top Just click on the cross and backup will be Skipped, you can backup at anytime by simply letting the iPhone sync .

Fastest way to Backup Your Device Manually is : Right Click on Device Name & Choose Backup.

Your iPhone and/or iPod touch is backed up by iTunes each time you:

  • Sync with iTunes (automatically on the first sync, every time you connect it to the computer)
  • Update in iTunes (occurs automatically without prompting)
  • Restore in iTunes (prompts you to create a backup before the restore process begins)

Although iTunes backs up most of your iPhone and iPod touch settings, downloaded applications, your audio, video, and photo content are not included in the backup.

If restoring from an iTunes backup, your iPhone and iPod touch settings, downloaded applications, audio, video, and photo contents will re-sync to the device because the “Sync” option under the respective tabs will be checked in iTunes when restoring from a backup. If you choose to restore your device as a new user, downloaded applications, audio, video, and photo content will not be sync until you select the “Sync” option in iTunes under each tab.

Also, with iPhone 2.0 software and iTunes 7.7 or later, you can manually back up or restore your iPhone or iPod touch from a backup. To do so, Control-click or right-click the iPhone or iPod touch icon on the left side of the iTunes window and chooseBack Up or Restore from Backup*:
