In This Tutorial We Will Show You How To Create Ringtone with Audacity.

This is a quick Tutorial on how to create free ringtones for your iPhone from any mp3.
You can download Audacity from: this site for windows, mac, or Linux/Unix. Your iPhone has to be jailbroken and you need to know how to ssh into your iPhone. First you need to download a few things.
| Windows | Download LAME and look for the file called lame_enc.dll. You can find binary distribution on the net by Google searching for “lame compile download binary” or visiting this site. |
| Linux/Unix | Download LAME from it’s home page and compile it as a shared object, then look for the file called libmp3lame.so (usually in /usr/local/lib). |
| Macintosh | Download the appropriate LAMELib from here. |
Note: You have to put the above Folder/File on your desktop.
Now let’s open Audacity and drag and drop an mp3 into the window or just select File, then Open and choose the mp3 you want.
Now choose appoximately 30 seconds or lower of the song. You can zoom in so you have the exact point to begin and end. After zooming in just slide the selection left or right to get to the exact point. Play around with it a little and you will figure it out.
Once you have the selection higlighted in grey, goto Edit and Click Copy.
Now goto File and click New and then Paste the selection in the new Window. Your new File should now just have your selection only (aprrox. 30 seconds of song).
Now for the last 5 seconds of the song it is good to add an effect so the end of the song fades out (i do this on all my ringtones). So scroll to the end of the song (about 3-5 seconds) and higlight that section only and goto Effect and click on Fade Out. It will automatically do this for you. Nice fade out effect.
Now click Export and keep everything as is (mp3 format). and hit ok.
Skip this next step if you know how to create an AAC Version in iTunes (Very important Step!!) To create an AAC Version you need to open iTunes Preferences and goto Import Settings and click on AAC Converter.
Now you should have a new mp3 on your desktop of your ringtone. Drag this new mp3 into iTunes. Now in iTunes right click the new mp3 and click on Create AAC Version. This will make a duplicate file, right under your mp3 selection in iTunes (you can check the duplicate by right clicking and click Get Info, It should say: Kind: AAC Audio File). Now Drag the AAC File out of iTunes and on your desktop. When it is on your desktop it should be a ___.m4a file. Now just manually slow click twice to rename the file. Change the .m4a to .m4r . If a Message Box comes up, click Use .m4r (not the blue one).
You can now play the Ringtone in -iTunes – or better you should simply drag the ringtones into Ringtones section on the iTunes and sync your iPhone with itunes.
You can also SSH into your iPhone and drag the new .m4r file into: /var/stash/Ringtones folder
Note: See SSH Tutorial in the Guides Section, or use Cyberduck to SSH for Macs.
Your Ringtone can now be played.
