Apple is exploring 3D Graphical User Interface for the iOS Devices that will work with proximity sensor arrays points a new Apple Patent. According to the Patently Apple, the 3D interface will respond to hovering gestures.
The 3D display environment will display a perspective view with the help of onboard sensors alone, without the user ever needing to touch the display.
In some implementations, the display environment could be changed based on gestures made a distance above a touch sensitive display that incorporates proximity sensor arrays.
